How do I make the most of a remodel project?
Start with your goals
Outlining your end vision is a great place to begin your remodel planning.
What are you looking to accomplish?
- Cosmetic Upgrades – Update counters, backsplash, appliances, fixtures, and/or cabinetry
- Refresh the Layout – Within the existing walls of the room, create a new space plan that functions more efficiently, then update all of the finishes and fixtures.
- Design a New Space – Tear out walls and rebuild the space to totally reconfigure it while also making it function more efficiently and replacing all finishes and fixtures.
Establish a budget
Once you know what you want to accomplish, figure out what you are comfortable spending. What is the maximum you think is palatable? By creating a budget you won’t go beyond, you can cut that back by 10-15% to accommodate any unforeseen expenses. If you end up not discovering a surprise behind the walls, or you find a tile that is less expensive than you expected, you can either pocket the savings and finish your remodel under budget, or you can spend a bit more on the finishing touches and still be within budget.
Create a priority list
Break your remodel ideas into “must have” and “nice to have” items. We suggest you work with a designer on your ideal remodel to get an early estimate of the cost to complete it. If the proposed estimate falls within your comfort spend, GREAT. If it’s a little higher, you can cut back on your nice-to-have choices. If your budget and dreams don’t see eye to eye, don’t fret. You still have options.
Start with the design you are dreaming about and break the project into phases. Working with an Interior Designer, you might want to start with a design-only phase. Create the space plan, select materials, chose cabinets and appliances, and get the perfect space planned out. From there, you can DIY the project at your leisure.
Start with the design you are dreaming about and ask your Designer to help you select materials with a similar look but at a lower cost. Your Designer will have plenty of ideas for getting you the look you want and saving you money through vendor resources.
Pull back on some of the nice-to-have selections that you don’t have your heart set on and move forward with the full-service remodeling project.
